If shipments within cross-company transports based on real-time data can be tracked strictly, many challenges in complex logistics network can be solved
(MM Logistik 05.2006) The logistics sector benefits from the use of RFID-technology to a great extent. While at the moment the advantages within the end-consumer-segment still get picked out as a central theme in the broad public, innovative companies are already evaluating the multifaceted potentials of the transponder technology for the optimisation of the supply chain.
The software house inet-logistics examined together with the Austrian research establishment V-Research and in cooperation with the international logistics service provider Gebrüder Weiss during a one-year field experiment the innovative combination of technologies and their practicability for the real-time-based shipment tracking in transport processes across companies. Thus, they placed a challenge which often remains unresolved in the centre of their research.
Furthermore, new products for the recording and transfer of shipment information were developed in the course of this pilot project. These products get marketed by inet-logistics under the name "Shipment-Localisation-Kit", in short SLK. Together with the manufacturers of the individual components solutions were found in order to solve the challenges which were identified in the project, such as long-term power supply and charging. Demand-oriented SLKs were developed for the various transport tasks and conditions which occur during the cross-company shipment tracking.
