RFID for Shipment Tracking

Pilot project examines practical feasibility

(Midrange Magazin 01.2007) During this pilot project, RFID-technology was examined while it was used for various tasks relating to the shipment tracking. In addition to the identification of shipments and objects, RFID was used and tested together with sensor technology as a remote information memory and also in combination with palm readers. Within this project RFID-transponders and reading stations replaced the error-prone, time-consuming and labour-intensive manual recording of goods receipts and goods issues. The RFID-gates which were especially erected for this purpose at the entrance and exit to the warehouses identified the contents of the loading devices. The shipments were already equipped during packaging with RFID-transponders for it. When the goods were loaded the goods issue was recorded by RFID-reading stations and data were transferred via a GSM-module per GPRS to a central IT-system.

For the data processing a new Asset Management System was integrated which manages the reading stations and GSM-modules as well as the shipping units. Designed for collaborative processes, applications and data can be integrated and used in nearly every possible work- and IT-environment. As a result of this pilot project concrete products - the so-called Shipment Localisation Kits (SLK) - have emerged which deal with different transport tasks and conditions. These SLKs ensure that shipments get tracked correctly and precisely even during cross-company transports.
